From the remarkable mind of a creative genius comes a contemporary twist on traditional quilt patterns — and an invitation to discover once again the value of play. Over 60 years, Fred Calland—classical radio personality, war veteran, storyteller, adventurer and fabric artist—created more than a hundred quilt tops. “Not Another Like It … On the Block” collects 35 of Fred’s designs, accompanied by his delightful comments about the making of each quilt. Fred’s artistic streak emerged early, and he made his first quilt in 1939 at age 15. By the time he passed away in 1999, Fred’s quilts numbered more than 100. Some of his most interesting quilt designs were the result of a technique he called “Construction, Deconstruction, Reconstruction. ” This occasionally involved cutting finished quilt blocks into pieces and letting his beloved dachshunds traipse through them a few times until a new design presented itself on the floor. “Day Lilies” is a colorful example of this technique. Curated by his sister Ann Calland, affiliated with the Quilters Hall of Fame, this book also includes historical photos from Fred’s life and career. Quilting legend Hazel Carter writes the Foreword, offering her affectionate impressions of Fred and his quilts.
